A TEACHER'S APPEAL.
THE WANGANUI CASE
.(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
PALMERSTON NORTH, this day,
The Press Association report of the result of Mr Clarkson's appeal against his dismissal by the Wanganui Education Board is rather misleading. Although the Court held that he ought to be re-instated, it pronounced the charges against him to be proved, and ordered him to pay the Board's costs as well as his own. Briefly stated, the Board's charges were the unsatisfactory state of the school as shown by the examination reports from 1897 to 1901 inclusive. In its judgment the Court said:—The Court finds t-vafc JJ?e charges brought against the appellant have been fully proved, but the Court is of opinion that there are mitigating circumstances in favour of the appellant. It considers that though he has been proved to have been guilty of neglect and want of zeal, he was exposed to some disadvantageous circumstances, especially during 1901; and it appears to this Court, sitting as a Court of - equity and good conscience, that the Board ought not, having regarct to all the circumstances of the case, to have inflicted upon the appellant the full penalty of dismissal, and it is ordered that he be re-in-stated. The appellant, however, has conduced to the action of the Board by his own conduct, and this, too, after the serious warning he received in December, 1899, when he was served with a notice of discharge, which was afterwards withdrawn.
