SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
This morning John Allen, a married man, aged twenty-three years, a native of Kennington Essex, England, and head storeman of the steamer Kumara, was found unconscious with his head split open and two ribs broken in No. 1 hold of that vessel. It appears that last night the vessel's holds were covered in, and it is a mystery how Allen managed to get into his dangerous position. The general opinion is that he got into the hold last night, but by what means is uncertain. It is suggested that on coming on board he walked into the hold in the darkness. A more probable (theory, -however, is that the hatches were lifted and-were closed again after the accident. The supposition is based upon the fact that last night the hatch, which is the only entrance /to the hold, was closed, and this morning Allen was found in the hold with the hatchway closed over him. The injured man was taken out of the. hold and conveyed to the hospital in the ambulance.
On enquiry at the hospital this afternoon it was stated that Allen was still unconscious, and that his condition was critical.
