THE TENTH CONTINGENT.
>EPARTURE OF THE AUCKLAND MEN. i
The Auckland men selected for the lenth Contingent, numbering 180 in ?", took their departure for Wellington and the Trentham camp at 1.30 p.m. to-day. The force was composed of 64 men from Auckland city f*d surrounding districts, 25 from Hamilton, 25 from Cambridge, and the *est from the Thames, Ohinemuri and Whangarei. The Dtogaville section ■v «»s not yet arrived. The names of
most of the *m6n have already been published; the list of the Waikato and Dargkville detachments, are published below. ' • There was no public demonstration at the departure of the contingenters, and the farewell was a very quiet one. The men paraded at 12.30 p.m. in front of the brigade office, where the roll was called. Some of the men were in uniform, a number being returned contingenters who had seen service in South Africa, and others members of toWn and country volunteer corps. A considerable number, being civilians, were in plain clothes. From the Brigade Office the men were marched down by Major Reid to the railway station where they embarked fot Onehunga. His Worship the Mayor (Mr Alfred Kidd) briefly addressed the men, remarking that they were following in the footsteps of previous contingents, and wishing them good-bye and God-speed. For som§ mysterious reason, all the station gates were shut against the public, and the friends and relatives of the departing troopers had to content themselves with gazing from afar off through the fences. There was not a very large attendance to see the men off, and it would not bave involved any inconvenience at all to have allowed the troopers' friends on to the , platform. As the train steamed out of the station a few spectators gathered at the railway crossing on the road to the Railway Wharf and raised a cheer, and the troopers responded with farewell salutations and waving of hands and hats. At Onehunga the men joined the s.s. Rotoiti for -Wellington. On arrival at Wellington they will go straight into the Trentham camp. Sergt.-Major Tuck, of the Permanent Staff, left for Wellington in charge of the recruits. The-additional twenty-five men required: here for the contingent were being- recruited this afternoon.
