Mr Thomas Whitelaw, who for many years was the Hawke's Bay manager of the South British Insurance Co., has commenced business in Auckland as an accountant, land and commission agent. Before joining the South British Mr Whitelaw was in the employ of Messrs E. Mitchelson and Co. and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co., of this city. Mr Whitelaw also conducted auctioneering and agency businesses in Dannevirke and Wanganui, and has lately been superviser of several sawmills in. the Wellington, Hawke's Bay. and Auckland provinces. Mr T. Pickering, of Taviuni, recently has met Ms death by drowning- Deceased, who was .a wellknown trader residing on Taviuni, was away collecting yams on the opposite main land- (Vanua Leva), and it was while on his return that his boat got caught in a squall and turned turtle. Three of the crew, Fijians, managed to reach Taviuni by ■ swimming, and reported the occurrence. Search was at ouce instituted, but neither Pickering nor the boat had been found up to the time lofl the departure of the steamer Kia Ova, and fears are entertained that the deceased has met with a watery grave. There was at least one Polynesian with Mr Pickering at the time of the boat's capsize. Mr Pickering arrived in Fiji, in the ketch Jupiter, from Picton, New Zealand, in 1869. • ~ . ___
