THE FRUIT CROP.
The New Zealand Department of Agriculture (John D. Ritchie, secretary) has issued the following report on the condition and prospects of the
fruit crop
[Where two words follow the name of the fruit —thus, "Apples: Average; fair" —the first refers to quantity, the second to quality. If one adjective only —thus, "Apples: Average"—it denotes quantity.] Whakapirau (North Auckland Vinegrowers' Association.) Apples: Above average. Figs: Average. Grapes (outdoor): Under average. Mulberries: Average. Peaches: Average. Passion-fruit: . Average. Pears: Average. Persimmons: Under average. Plums: Above average. Plums, Japanese: Above aver-ag-e. Quinces: Average. Tomatoes: Average. General remarks: Outdoor grapes have suffered much from cold and high winds.
Whangarei (Fruit-growers' Association). Apples: Average; good. Blackberries: Heavy, good. Figs: Good. Grapes (indoor): Heavy, fine. Grapes (outdoor): Average. Nectarines: Average; good. Oranges: Under average. Peaches (late): Over average; fine. Passion-fruit: Heavy; fine. Pears: Heavy; good. Persimmons: Average. Plums (late): Heavy; good. Plums (Japanese): Heavy crop; almost over. Quinces: Average. Tomatoes: Poor. Walnuts: Average. General remarks: Plums about done; large supplies of peaches; pears (Williams), etc., being shipped South, and sent to local factory. Peachtrees generally making good growth, save Royal George and some others suffering from leafdisease. Codlin-moth getting rather bad again.
Port Albert (Fruit-growers' Association). Apples: Medium to heavy; good. Figs: Good. Grapes (indoor): Good. Grapes (outdoor): Good. Lemons: 'Good. Oranges: Poor. Peaches: Very good. Pears: Medium to good; good. Plums: Good; splendid. Quinces: Medium. Tomatoes: Good. General remarks: Weather very dry. In consequence of low prices, quantities of plums rotting under trees. American blight not so bad as last year. Codlin-moth has been kept- under control.
Waikumete (fruit-growers' Association). Apples: Average; fair. Grapes (indoor): Average. Grapes (outdoor): Average; good. Lemons: Average; good. Medlars: Average; fair. Mulberries: Average; fair. .Nectarines: Average; very good. Oranges: Average; good. Peaches: Average; very good. Passion-fruit: Average, good. Pears: Average; very good. Persimmons: Average. Plums: Average; good. Plums (Japanese): Heavy; very good. Quinces: Average; very good. Tomatoes: Heavy; very fair. General remarks: The warm dry weather lias cruised a lot of apples and pears to fall, making the late crop rather light. Trees are in a healthy condition.

Bronze beetle very bat! early in the season. Codlin-moth not so bad.
