ANNIVERSARY REGATTA,
[The rowing races and model yacht race postponed from the Anniversary Regatta on January 29 eventuated at Pine Island on Saturday afternoon. The s.s. Admiral, which left the ferry tee shortly before two o'clock, took a large number to the course. Captain H. Parker, who officiated at starter, went oil' from the steamer in Messrs. Seagar Bros.', steam launch, kindly lent for the occasion, and marked off the co-urse from Greenhithe Wharf to a little past the Pine Island Wharf, a distance of about one mile. Opposite the Pine Island Wharf the judge, Mr. R. Logan, jun., took up his position in a small yacht. |
The first race was for maiden gigs over lOiit. The starters were: Auckland, St. George's, and Waitemata. The start was even, and the boats kept close together all the way. At the finishing point Auckland was half a length ahead of Waitemata, who had a lead c-f about the same distance from St. George's. The crew of the winning boat were: D. Fort' (stroke), A. Tucker (3), J. Neville (2), G. Giffen (bow), Tucker (cox.).
Only two crews contested the senior gig race—Auckland " and St, George's. The course was from below Greenhithe Wharf to a little palst Pine. Island Wharf, about a mile and a half. For the greater part of the journey Auckland kept the lead, but a short distance from home St, George's put on a spurt and won by about a length.
There were seven entries for tho model yacht race, which created great interest. The course was from a little the other side of Greenhitho Wharf to the Pine Island Wharf. May lead and kept a straight course, three of the others going into Pine Island, where they stranded, the remaining two making for the other ishore. May won easily.
In the stump outrigger race there were three contestants: Tucker (Auckland R.C.), Richards (St. George's R.C.), and Busby (St. George's R.C.). Tucker had a start of 30s. and won easily, Richards being second.
A native crew from the Countess of Ran Curly gave swimming exhibitions during the afternoon.
