DRAINAGE.
(To the Edit
Sir,—Re Captain Lieurnur's system, this system has- not met with much acceptance, owing in a great measure to its original cost, but mostly to the fact of the principle being radically defective. It is evident that the pipes must become clogged up sooner or later with faecal matter, and^ I believe this result is not unusual. Sanitary authorities do not recommend it. I can assure Mr Cheal that it has not any hold whatever in the Old Country. The water carriage system is the highest recommended, being the cleanest and the safest, provided that house drainage as well as public drainage are carried out oh sound sanitary principles and receive proper attention as regards flushing. Irrigation being recommended for sewage disposal, it secures the best returns if properly conducted, and can be done without nuisance of any kind. —I am, etc-, JAMES LEE.
