WELLINGTON ANNIVERSARY REGATTA.

AUCKLAND YACHTS COMPETING,

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, Saturday

Three events on the programme of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club's Anniversary Regatta were sailed this afternoon. There was a whole sail north-north-west breeze, which was a little fluky, and ofl: Korokoro and Te Aro the water was almost smooth. The rating1 race for firstclass yachts was taken part in by Waitangi, Rainbow, and lorangi, which, got away in. that torder at about 2h. -30111. p.m. within 225. of each other. The finishing times were as follows: —lorangi, 4h. 51m.; Waitangi, 4h. 53m. 155.; Rainbow, 4b. 58m. 535. . Time allowances did not alter the positions of the boats and they were placed as they finished. The boats w^ere sent away well together. The course w 7as from a buoy opposite Queen's Wharf to Point Halswell, and from there to a buoy opposite Woi'ser Bay. in the channel entering- the harbour; thence back across the harbour ;;1 a bnioy opposite Petone; and from Petone to the finish at Queen's Wharf; The course described almost an equilateral triangle, except for the long acute angle between Point Halswell and Worser Bay. On the run down from the Queen's Wharf to Worser Bay Waitangi took the lead, favoured by a leading- wind; the lorangi going up to windward and showing better weatherly qualities than the other boats. A light northerly breeze was blowing, and when the bloats ran round Point Halswell and were on their way to Worser Bay buoy, with the wind dead aft, lorangi and Rainbow set spinnakers, with the result that lorangi rounded the buoy first, the Rainbow just at her stern, and Waitangi 2rn. further away. On the beat up from Worser Bay to Petone, however, the Waitangi regained the leading position, and rtounded the Petone buoy 50s. ahead of lorangi, while Rainbow was 4Jm. behind the second boat. The wind, oC course, was nearly dead aft on the run back to Queen's Wharf, and on this run the lorangi set a balloon jib, and the Waitangi a jib topsail. The light wind, however, favoured the lorangi, which was splendidly handled by her owner, regained first place and won, beating Waitangi even without her time allowance. The finishing times were: lorangi, 4h. 51m., 1; Waitangi, 4h. 53m. 155., 2; Rainbow, 4h. 5Sm. 535., 3. The loraugi and Waitangi were sailed by their owners, and the Rainbow by Harry McComish. The time allowances were: Waitangi, scratch; Rainbow, 4m. 495.; lorangi, sm. 475. In the race for second-class yachts there were five competitors. Siren crossed the finishing line Is. ahead of Mahina, but the latter gained first prize with Im. 245. to spare on her time . allowance. The handicap race for third-class yachts was won by Karaka, with Mahuta second.
