ENGLISHMEN ONE WICKET DOWN

FOR 9S

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

ADELAIDE, January 20,

The third test match was resumed to-day in bright, sultry weather. Tlift attendance numbered 8000. The wicket was excellent. Barnes was unable to play, being in bed owing to a strain of his left knee received while bowl- • ing on Saturday. With two wickets down for 173 the Australians resumed their first innings. Braund and Gimn resumed bowling, and the early play was steady. When 92 was reached Hill was missed at slip by Jones off Gunn. The next two balls gave him six, but' facing Braund the left-hander lifted the ball to long-on, and Tyldesley, stepping up the sloping asphalt cycling track, effected a brilliant catch. Hill had been batting for two hours and 42 minutes, and gave only one chance. He made 12 fours. The third wicket fell at 197. Gregory opened with a late cut for four. When at 39 Duff was missed by Maclaren at cover slip off Gunn, but it was not a costly blunder, as two overs later he was out leg-before. Batting for an hour and a half he hit eight, fours. The fourth wicket fell at 229.In the twenty-five minutes prior to luncheon the play was slow, and only 19 runs were made. The scores at the adjournment were: Gregory, 30; Armstrong, 7; total, 248. The same bowlers resumed after luncheon. With the total at 260 Armstrong tamely returned a ball to Gunn. Trumble joined Gregory, who was scoring faster than before luncheon, and reached half a century after eighty minutes' batting. The fielding was brilliant, and the batsmen found it difficult to get the ball through, especially Gunn. Gregory, when going nicely, spooned the ball to mid-on, and Blythe made an easy catch. Grei gory batted for 100 minutes without giving- a chance. |_c hit 10 fours. Six wickets for 28S. With one run added Gunn clean bowled Trumble. Howell and Noble took the score to 300 before the former was smartly caught in the slips. With only seven runs added\a beautiful ball from Gunn found Noble's wicket. Kelly and McLeod stayed a little while, but the irresistible Gunn bowled the latter with a bailer. Gunn to-day got five wickets for 58 runs. He kept a splendid length, and was always difficult. The fielding was brilliant, and Lilley allowed only two byes. The Englishmen began their second innings with Maclafen and Hayward, against the bowling- of Howell/and Xoble. The captain soon scored 10 before his partner scored, and kept well ahead, making an occasional four, though Howell troubled him. The first hour's play yielded 62. Trumble relieved Howell, and a couple of overs later Armstrong replaced Noble. At 80 Trumble beat Maclaren by a good-length ball. Maclaren batted for 80 minutes without giving a chance.
