FISHING WITH DYNAMITE
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
COROMANDEL, this day.
A shocking- accident occurred yesterday to; Patrick Petley, who, with two other men, were fishing near the Little Passage. Petley was in the act of throwing a plug of dynamite into the water vyhen it exploded, shattering his right hand, and inflicting- injuries about his neck. He was taken to the hospital, when it was found necessary to amputate one hand at the wrist. General sympathy is expressed for Petley's family, he beinga general favourite and well known throughout' the district.
A start has been made to lay the gas mains in Queen-street under the footpath on the western side, beginning at the Waitemata Hotel corner. This step is necessary in order to prevent having- to break up Queenstreet after it has been asphalted. The city water mains will also be laid under the pavement.
