LONDON, January IS
In the House of Commons Mr Balfour stated that no official assurances bad been asked for by Germany in reference to Mr Chamberlain's speech which led to the outburst of Anglophobia. In an unofficial conversation Lord Lansdowne, Secretary for Foreign Affairs, pointed out to the German Ambassador that Mr Chamberlain made no charges of barbarity against the Germain or other armies. The Government considered that nothing in the speech required qualification or withdrawal.
The House cheered the statement
Many newspapers express delight at Mr' Seddon's speech at the Wellington patriotic demonstration.
The references to the soldiers in the King's Speech at the opening of Parliament are favourably commented upon on the Continent.
