AUCKLAND V. UNITED
After Auckland's lamentable display againdt Parnell the previous week, the supporters of the "two blues" were not very confident as to the team's ability to make a good show against last year's champions. Auckland winning toss, took the wickets. Two wickets were down tor 30 but Neill and Nicholson made a very useful stand, and carried the score to Wj before the latter was dismissed for jo. The outgoing batsman had a "life (.from a very difficult chance) in the slips early in the innings, and made another taise stroke towards point, but otherwise his innings was very attractive, especially on the off-side. Neill left soon alter, having compiled an excellent 2i>. Shepneru and Dazeley made a very useful Btana, the former compiling 37 by free and attractive cricket, and the latter, wtoisa promoted junior, keeping his end up well. At the end of the innings Cossey ami Schmoll made another stand, the former hitting vigorously. Altogether Auckland's batting showed considerable improvement. Mills, the Ponsonby attack could do very little against the Gordonites, and some attractive cricket of the aggressive order was seen. Kallender, in scoring 112 f.i well under two hours, showed his very best form, and gave a display which has not been equalled on the Domain for a lon-» time. His hitting was clean and hard all round the wicket, 14 boundaries being induded in his score. Dr. Pabst (49) and Lusk (37) also showed good form. Before time was called Ponsonby had lost one wicket for seven runs. GORDON.—First Innings. Williams, b Wallace 3 R.
