WANGANUI, Monday.
An inquest was held to-daj, regarding the death of a young woman named Martha Reader, who died m the hospital on December 28. lhe jury returned a verdict, 'that deceased met her death from septic peritonitis, brought on by the perforation of the womb by an instrument used by herself. 'lhe D ury consider that it is to be regretted that the rules of the hospital do not provide for dying depositions being taken in suspected criminal cases.'
TIMARU, Monday. The Mackenzie County Council have resolved to present a claim on the National Mortgage and Agency Company for £920, for the value of a plantation at Lake Tekapo, destroyed by a fire started on the company's adjoining run. The Council formed the plantation by successive planting during. the last 12 years, funds being supplied by rent from the Government plantation and reserves in the county, and the actual cost is nearly £1000. WESTPORT, Monday. The revenue accruing to the Westport Harbour Board during the year ended December 31st exceeds the estimate, the amount being: Ordinary revenue £50,053 17/10, special rate on coal £1457 If: total £51,510 18/10. The surplus revenue last year, over and above the amounts chargeable against revenue accounts, were as follows: —Advance to special fund account for works £15,050 S/10, cash in bank at close of year —harbour fund account £3799 14/7, special rate on coal account £1457 1/: total £20,307 4/5. There is also a sum of £20,000 on fixed deposit.
