ONEHUNGA.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. There were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr D. A. Sutherland) In the chair, and Crs. Colledge, Stoupe, Rowe, Shaldrick, Vause, and McLeod.
Water Wanted.—Mr C. C. Davis, manager New Zeaand Glue Works, wrote reminding the Council of their resolution to lay water to the glue works, and requesting them to give effect to the resolution at an early date—Cr. Rowe moved that the Council adhere to their former resolution, viz., that the work be done when the Council is in funds.—Cr. McLeod seconded. — Cr. Shaldrick thought this water extension as well as others should be gone on with at once. He moved as an amendment that the consideration of the letter be deferred until next meeting, and in the meantime he would give notice to rescind the resolution on the Council books bearing on this matter.—Cr. Colledge seconded the amendment, which was lost, the motion being carried. Waikaraka Cemetery. — The Cemetery Committee recommended that a portion of the cemetery not used for burial purposes at present be fenced off at a cost ot £10, and leased for grazing purposes, providing no sheep were allowed to graze.— Cr. Rowe moved the adoption of the report, which was agreed to. Borough Valuer.—Mr Sidney Brookfield was appointed to make the triennial valuation of the borough during the term ending Feb. 15 next, at a remuneration of £20. „ . Financial Statement—The Town Clerk made the usual fortnightly statement, after which accounts amounting to £72 9/10 were passed for payment. Defective Footpaths.-The Foreman of Works wrote informing the Council that the footpaths tarred for the first time last year were getting in a bad state of repair, while many of the older paths were breaking away.—Cr. Rowe moved that 5000 gallons of tar be procured and the work of repairing the paths be proceeded with at once—Cr. Colledge seconded the resolution, which was agreed to. Petition.—Cr. Shaldrick presented a petition from residents on the Mount Smart Road asking that a footpath be formed on the south side of the road.-On the motion of Crs. Shaldrick and McLeod the matter was referred to the Streets Committee to consider and report upon.^ _ Rats.—For the purpose of minimising the possibility of plague it was resolved to invite the oublic to destroy rats and to pay one penny for each rat destroyed and delivered to the turncock at the pumping station up to the 15th February. Water Consumption.—The turncock reported that during the past fortnight 1,335,000 gallons of water had been pumped to the reservoir. Ferry-street.—Mrs-Caren wrote requesting the Council to re-open Ferry-street, which had been closed for a considerable time by permission of the Council.—The letter was received. Half-holidav.—lt was resolved to hold a special meeting on Monday, 20th instant, re the weekly half-holiday. Noxious Weeds.-Mr J. T. Watson, lessee of the Mount Smart Reserve, wrote reminding the Council of the overgrowth on the reserve.—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr- Rowe it was resolved that the lessee be informed that it is his duty to clear all noxious weeds and overgrowth on the reserve.
