CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
There is every prospect of a fine meeting. The town, is full of visitors. The course is very hard, and none of the candidates have been more than a mile and a half. Those that have come out of their tasks best are Djin Djin, Fulmen, Canteen, and Palaver. Fulmen is more forward thou he was last year, and galloping more generously. Whatever beats him should win, and his most dangerous opponents may be Ideal and Palaver. Battleaxe and Canteen are very well, but Tortuila and Melwood have not been spun out at Ricearton. Glenaladaie injured one of his hoofs, and my not start. My selections are: — Cup: Fulmeu 1, Ideal 2, Palavier 3. Stewards: Glenogle or Royal Artillery, Blazer next best. Hurdles: Huku. Maiden: San Remo. Ricearton Welter: Field Battery or Peerage. Welcome Stakes: Stead's selected. Ladies' Purse: Magnificent or Cadet.
