PAVING QUEEN STREET.
THREE TENDERS RECEIVED.
The matter of the paving of Queenstreet was advanced a further stage at the meeting of City Council last evening, when tenders for the work were opeued. Three tenders were received, two for wood paving from local firms, and one for asphalt, as follows:—Newson aud Coulson, wood, £27,725 16/; J. McLean and Sons, £28,277; Neufehatel Asphalt Company, £27,492. Messrs McLean and Sons wrote that it would be impossible to complete the work with seasoned wood within the time specified, and their tender was subject to an extension of time to a year. Messrs Newson and Coulson added a proviso that should the Australian Commonwealth place au export duty on timber their tender would be proportionally increased, and if any duty were taken off would be reduced. Mr R. R. Hunt wrote that he had been advised that he could not get Che plant ready for tar macadam in time, and that owing to opposition to granite blocks he would not submit a tender. If further time were allowed he would tender for tar macadam, using Coromandel granite. The Neufehatel Company offered to maintain the road for 20 years, the first five years free, and the remaining 15 at 9d per square yard, a total for the 20 years of £13,181. If the Council decided to maintain the roadway they would keep a plant in Auckland, and carry out the work at 14/ per square yard.
On the motion of the Mayor the tenders were referred to the Streets Committee.
The secretary of the Wellington Harbour Board wrote that owing* to the amount of work which the Board's engineer had in hand the Board was unable to oblige tlie Auckland City Council by placing his services at its disposal. The communication was received with regret at Mr Ferguson's inability to report.
