THE RENWICK FRAUD.
'FIVE YEARS" FOR
ACCUSED
LONDON, September 18,
Georgte Thompson, miner, and Charles" McNeilly, dentist, have been sentenced to five years for conspiring to defraud Mrs Renwick, a widow, of Melbourne.
[An account of the first hearing of this charge at Bow-street was contributed to our last Saturday's Supplement by our London correspondent. Briefly, Mrs Annie Renwick, who was accompanied by her daughter Daisy, became acquainted -with Thompson on the Omrah. They became friendly, and in London Thompson introduced the widow and her daughter to a man who passed as McMay. Under cover of offer of marriage the pair on a variety of pretexts, including the very simplest form of confidence trick, succeeded in., obtaining from Mrs Renwick various sums amounting in all to about £800. Thompson and "McMay" then disappeared, and 'the Melbourne widow and her offspring saw nothing more of them till after their arrest.]
