WAIHI, Saturday. THE WAIHI BOROUGH. The question of a boroug-h for Waihi cropped up last evening at the meetingl of the Hospital Committee. Mr Gilmore (Manager of the Waihi G.M. Company) said in referring- to the hospital that no doubt in a year or two ihey should have "vVaihi constituted a borough. Mr .Roache, engineer to the same Company, stated that the stumbling block to the borough being granted during1 the past was the fact that the Act did not allow the moneys of a borough to Ik 5 expended outside the boundary in foraiing or maintaining" roads. However, he understood that a special Act was now about to be passed which would do away with the difficulty. Mr Ross (President of the Waihi Borough Association) pointed out that both the previous speakers were slightly at fault. Instead of waiting- two years, the petition would be public in about so many days. The remarks re maintenance of roads by Mr Roache were also in error, because a clause already existed in the Municipal and Corporations Act. He was glad, however, to see that the same opposition would not be advanced this time. Other speakers Wforreu to the subject during- the evening. Mr Ross has since informed me that the petition has now been approved of by the Association's solicitor, and will be issued shortly for public signature. Another important * matter also cropped up—that of more representation for Waihi on the County Council. It is evident from the remarks passed that the Waihi Company's local officials support both this question and the borough movement. WESLEY AN SOCIAL. The annual social of the Wesley.-m choir was celebrated in the Miners' Union Hall last evening-. There was an excellent attendance. The Rev. C. Eaton presided. The following- programme was successfully gone through: — Glee by the choir, song-s by Mesdames Holmes and Gibbs, solo by Mr Tailor; g-ames, recitations a.nd competitions were also the order of the evening-. A presentation to Miss M. Morg-an (organist of the church) was the chief feature of the proceedings. Mr Treambath, on behalf of the trustees and friends, made tlie presentation, which consisted of a handsome g-old watch. The Rev. Eaton responded on behalf of Miss Morgan. WAIH MARTHA BRASS BAND. Last evening-, in the Academy of Music, a very pleasant social' was held in aid of the Martha Brass Band. Mrs Fraser's Art Union, which was to have been drawn during the proceedings, had to be postponed owing to the nonarrival of the outside return of tickets sold. The band, under the able conductorship of Mr Gordon, supplied first-class music, and Mr R. C. Davis acted as M.C. Mr E. Johnston carried out his secretarial duties in a most efficient manner. The Waihi Hospital Fund now amounts to the sum of £(385, including subsidies. The Hospital will be conducted as a separate and local institution, the committee of management having decided to sever any connection which may have been made with the Thames Hospital Board. HOSPITAL MEETING. The weekly meeting of the Waihi Hospital Committee took place in Lawless' Club-room la.st evening. There was a good attendance of members The chairman of commitvo. the Rev. Faiher Brodie, presided. Satisfactory reports were received from the various Friendly Societies. ; It was resolved that all moneys col-; lected on behalf of the Hospital Fund be banked for six months in the National Bank of New Zealand, Waihi, with the understanding that the money be available 'It any time for building purposes. Votes of thankswere passed to Messrs Gillfinnan nnd Buchanan for information re hospital site and offer of a lecture in aid of the funds respectively. A communication was received from Dr. McGregor asking the committee to point out the conditions under which the hospital was proposed to be established. A letter was also received from the Thames Hospital Board stating that the matter re hospital was deferred till next meeting, nth prox., for consideration. A discussion took place with regard to Dr. McGregor's request, Mr A. V.. Ross proposed that the committee proceed to establish the hospital under clauses 43 and 43 of the Act, which provides for a separate institution and title. He considered that in view of the hostile attitude of the Thames Hospital Board this course should be adopted. A lengthy discussion followed, in which it was pointed out that the demands made by the committee were only barely adequate for the requirements of the place, and that less than twenty beds would be totally inadequate. On the resolution being put to the meeting it was carried unanimously. It was then decided to open up a list of annual subscribers in conformity with the clauses of the Act governing the establishment of a separate hospital. The meeting then dispersed.
