GREY LYNN RATEPAYERS
Ratepayers in the Borough of Grey Lynn were invited to attend a meeting in St. George's Hall on Saturday night, but there was only a small attendance. Mr R. T. Waruock (Mayor) presided and explained that the meeting was a statutory one held in order to discuss the question of raising a loan for drainage purposes, and also for extending the present water supply in the Surrey and Sussex Wards of the Borough of Grey Lynn. The proposal was to borrow £6000 for 41 years at 3A per cent, under the Loans to Public Bodies Act. Of the! £6000 the sum of £1500 would be devoted to extending the water supply to the newly built streets. In one street ten houses were supplied by a half inch p)ipe, which showed the necessity for laying . downt ■ proper mains. Unless they got the loan the newly built streets could not^ be drained for some years. He might mention that in the past the Council had expended £3000 out of revenue in drainage. To drain the aide streets £1200 would be required, and the other £ 3250 was necessary to do the gullies, and that would then drain all the houses in the two wards. The present rate of 4d in the £ would pay the interest on the loan so that extra taxation would not be necessary. Although a special rate of 4d would be struck, that was purely formal, as the ipresent rate would cover the interest on the proposed loan. After some questions had been answered by the Engineer (Mr H. H. Metcalfe), it was resolved, on the motion of Mr S. C. Brown, seconded by Mr R. Hall, "That this meeting approves of the drainage and water extension scheme for the Surrey and Sussex Wards, and requests the Council to take the necessary poll to authorise obtaining the money from the Government or otherwise to carry out the work."
