DEATH OF MR HARRY WHITAKER.
The President of the Auckland Club to-day received the following message by cable through Reuters Agency: "I regret to inform you that I have received advice from Capetown to the effect that the cable from you to Trooper Harry Whitaker cannot be delivered, owing to the decease of the addressee." Trooper Whitaker was injured in a railway accident, in respect of whiel* Tr F. Earl cabled to Mr Whitaker sympathy of the Club, and the ,iow received conveys the intei c of his decease. Mr Harry Whits-, .ver was a son of the late Sir Fredk. Whittaker, and was very well known, and most popular in Auckland. He was at one time secretary of the Sylvia Park Stud Company, and was also for some time vi the service of the Bank of New Zealand.
The accident which resulted in the death of Mr Whitaker occurred on June 14 to the mail train from Capetown to Nerval's Pont. This train collided with a coal train on a sharp curve, and several carriages were smashed. The casualties were five soldiers and one conductor injured, four seriously injured, two slightly hurt. Trooper Whitaker had been legs fractured, but showed great composure and fortitude. While firmly wedged among the broken wood and iron, and suffering agony, he called to the relieving party to attend to the other sufferers first, saying it was likely that they were wors-> than he was,'and that he was all right.
