Sergeant Peterson, who was seriously wounded at Vereeniging, was attached to the Third Contingent, and saw some hard fighting during his first campaign! He was captured and imprisoned, bat subsequently escaped from Nooigedacht and safely eluded Boer pursuers, only on reaching the British lines to be shot in error by a sentry.
