VOLUNTEER NOTES.
THE NEW RIFLE
All the Auckland infantry volunteer companies, the two mounted infantry companies, the Auckland Engineers, and the Onehunga Rifles have just been supplied by the Defence Office with the new Lee-Enfield magazine ritle, which carries eight cartridges in the magazine and one in the barrel, and is sighted up to 2UOO yards. Col. White, Officer in Command of the District, informs us that about 800 rifles in all have been issued here. Our volunteers are now In the best of circumstances as regards their stamp of weapon, for the Lee-Enfleld was lately decided by the Commission which sat in England during the Boer war to be the best procurable rifle, and It was decided to adopt it and to make one alteration, viz., to load the rifle with a clip, as is done with the Mauser. The rifle has the Lee bolt action, with the En field barrel, and is adjudged to be an excellent and up-to-date weapon. This afternoon the inspection parade of the corps in the Auckland No. 1 Infantry Battalion was held by Lt.-Col. White at the Drill Hall parade ground.
