Hanaen, of the Ineklnd Electric Tramway Company, wrote as follows:- Considering the early introduction of electric? tramways. into your ais.net, you will no doubt agree with me that the time is opportune to ask your Council whether they are inclined to favourably consider proposals from mv company to provide Onehun|ja also with electrical energy for lifting, cooking, heating, ventilating and other power purposes. Should your Council, therefore, be desirous of giving the town th? benefit, conveniences and economy to be derived from such energy I am authorised by my company to discuss with the Council the terms and conditions for such lighting.' On the. motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Hill, the letjer was referred to the Council to consider and report upon. Waterworks Loan.—Mes.srs Buddie, Button and Co. wrote asking on what date the Council would pfiy off the existiug waterworks loan.. The Mayor pointed out that arrangements were complet for the new loan. Now all that remained was to fix the date for issuing the debentures. On the motion of Cl: Shaldrick, seconded by Cr. Kelsayi, it was resolved that the debentures be dated as from the Ist of August, and that Messrs Buddie, Button and Co.'s claim be repaid at once. Broken Metal.—Messrs Hadley and Co. wrote inforrn'mg- the Council that they were prepar/jd to take orders for the supply of broken metal. As they had several orders now on hand for next year they would be glad to receive the Council's order. The communication wa.s referred to the Council in Commif.tee to consider and report upon. Water Wanted.—Mr Davis, manager of the Glue Factory, wrote pointing out that as all other properties in the town had been supplied with water without extra cost he thought his factory should not be dealt with differently. Cr. Eishworth moved that the matter he deferred until funds were available. Cr. Vatise seconded the resolution. Cr. Shaldrick snid he wa.s opposed to such proposals. The expense of extending the water would be about £100, and a reasonable revenue would be derived. Besides he felt that it was the duty of the Council to assist in fosterinsr young industries in the town. OneJhunga must recognise industries, a?; they were of material assistance to the town. He moved as an amendment, "That that the water be laid to the glue works as requested." Cr. Collet] pc seconded the amendment, ■which wa.s lost, the mover and seconder only v&'ciug for it, the original motion being carried. Slaughtering.—Mr J. D.' Eichle, sec- ?'***** °* *ke Department of Agricul-
ture, wrote stating that he would thank the Council to forward to him as early as possible all applications received for licenses for 'slaughterhouses under the Act. He also requested all licensees of slaughterhouses who have not applied for a license under the Slaughtering and Inspection Act, 1900, to do so without delay.—The communication was referred to the Council in Committee to report at next meeting. Water Consumption.—The turncock reported that during the past fortnight 990,000 gallons of water had been pumped to the reservoir. Finance Statement. —-The town clerk made his usual fortnightly financial statement, after which accounts amounting to £103 5/7 weTe passed for payment. Defective Culverts.—Cr. Kelsall drew the attention of the Council to the defective iron plates crossing the water channels, which he pointed out were extremely dangerous and likely to cause accidents. He also pointed out the unsafe state of a verandah oi' the property occupied by Mr Bray and .owned by .Messrs L. D. Nathan and Co. —Jt was resolved, on his motion, to request the property owners to remedy the defect, failing' which they would be removed.—This" was seconded by Cr. Shaldrick and agreed to. Notice of Motion.—Cr. Shaldrick gave notice to move at next meeting: "That clauses 15 and 16 of the waterworks bye-law be amended, and that the charges of 7/6 and 5/ each respectively for horses and cattle be cancelled, and a meter supply be substituted in lieu thereof.
