A BRUTAL MURDER.

CHRISTCHURCH, June 26.

A brutal murder of two women and a boy was. committed between Friday and Monday at East Eyreton.

The victims were Mrs Henry Martin, a widow, aged 70; Miss Ellen Martin, her daughter, aged 40; and a grandson, Lorimer Martin, aged 4.

In one room the grandmother and child were found with their heads smashed, and in another room the daughter's body was found similarly mutilated. All were dead.

The perpetrator of the dreadful crime appears to have gone coolly and deliberately to work, and to have been in no hurry to leave the premises until he had carried out his intention of robbing the establishment of money and valuables.

The Martins were a family well known and highly respected in the district. The occupants of the house were Mrs Martin, widow of the Into Henry Martin, farmer; an unmarried daughter, Ellen Martin; Lorimer Martin, son of Mr G. 11. Martin, who lives in the district; and a man servant named Alex. McLean.

After the tragedy a man servant of the family, McLean, was arrested and confessed to having committed the crime. It is believed his mind is deranged.
