SECRETARY HAY'S SON KILLED.
NEW YORK, June 24
Adelbert Hay, son of the Secretary of State, and late American Consul at Pretoria, fell from the window of an hotel at Newhaven, Connecticut. •It is suspected that while smoking near the window he fell asleep. He was killed instantly. His father is prostrated by the shock.
[The late Mr. Adelbert Hay was a very promising- young man of about 28 years. He will be remembered by New Zeala^iders as having performed during his term of office as American Consul in Pretoria, during- the earlier part, of the war, a-cts of great kindness to the New Zealand soldiers who were prisoners in the hands of the Boers. It was reported that our soldiers were starving and without proper clothing, and through the good offices of Mr. Dillingham, American Consul for Auckland, the matter was reported to the American Government, and through the kindness of Mr. Hay our men were supplied with food and comforts in their captivity.]
