ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last nig-ht. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr D. A. Sutherland) in the chair, and Crs. Colledge, Stoupe, Risfaworth, Hill, Vause, Kelsall, and Mcleod.
Mount Smart. Reserve.—A communication was received from the lessee of the Mount Smart Reserve, stating that owing to carters neglecting to close gates, cattle grazing on the reserve got out, and were either lost or impounded, causing him such loss that unless some arrangement was made he would be unablo to pay the rent, -and consequently would be obliged to ask the Council to cancel his Inane. The mat tar 'was (referred to the Reserves Committee to report upon.
Town Band.—Mr A. E. Cooke, late bandmaster of the Onehunga Town Band, wrote asking the Council, as trustees of the band property, to give ■Mm. possession of certain: Tnusiobooks, the property of two former trustees of the band. On the motion of Cr. Kelsall, seconded by Cr. Vause, it was resolved to return the books.
Electric Trams. —Mr Hansen forwarded the deed of delegation for the Council's signature, and requested that the same be granted at an early date.
1 Office Hours. —Councillor Stonpe, upon notice, moved that the resolution on the books extending the Town Clerk's hours from seven to nine o'clock on Saturdays be rescinded, and that the office be closed at noon on Saturdays. Cr. Kelsall seconded the motion, which was agreed to.
Tender.—The tender of T. G. Bray the borough carting for 12 months was accepted.
Drainage. —Mr B. Barr applied for permission to open the road leading bo the coal wharf to drain his property. The reqiiest was granted. Water Works Loan.—Mr G. A. Butrtle wrote inquiring* the period for which the Council required a loan of £4600, also when and where the. interest would be payable. In answer to the Mayor the Town Clerk stated the loan was for ten years or more, and that the interest would be payable half-yearly at the clerk's office, or through a bank. The consideration of the matter was deferred until next Monday, the date on which tenders arc returnable.
Recommendations. —The Counci3-in-Committee made the following recommendations re water supply:—l. That Mr Schmeidel have the option of being supplied by meter at the usual rate, in addition to the rate for domestic supply, or that he pay for six horses at the usual rate. 2. That the application of Mr C. Davis for water to be laid on to his premises in Anglestreet be left in the hands of the Mayor to report. The first recommendation was adopted. With reg-ard to the second, the Mayor reported that a large quantity of water would be consumed by Mr Davis and his neighbours. The pipes would have to be laid a distance of about 400 yards. Cr. Stoupe sakl the pipes had cost about £80. Afther further discussion, it was agreed that the Water Committee should bring up a proper estimate of the total cost of the work, and also the probable income to be derived therefrom.
