HAMILTON, Saturday
At the ordinary meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council, a letter was received from Mr H. Metcalfe, offering a preliminary report on a scheme for a water supply for Hamilton for £20. The letter also stated that no adequate supply could be obtained at reasonable cost, except by pumping. He thought a supply would cost £5000. The matter was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee. The conference of representatives of the Council and Kirikiriroa Road Board re the footway over the Railway Bridge was fixed for 28th inst. The Clerk reported that the overdraft at date was £812 18/8. The Finance Committee recommends that the area to be covered by the building regulations be extended as suggested at last meeting, that the depth from the road-line for brick or stone buildings be 60 feet, that no other building than of brick or of stone be erected within 20 feet of the rear of such buildings, and that all buildings to a further depth of 120 feet be erected in iron. The Mayor informed the Council that a public meeting to eonsidar the proposal to purchase Claudelands ground had defeated the motion by a large majority, and the matter was over as far as the Council was concerned. If, however, a petition signed by three-fifths of the ratepayers was presented to the Council, praying them to carry out the proposal, it would receive earnest consideration. The question of tarring and sanding Victoria-street from Taylor's to the Railway Station was referred to the Works Committee. A number of small works in the Borough were authorised.
