TANIWHA SYNDICATE.

For some time past the Taniwha Syndicate has had men prospecting an area of land situated between the Chelrnsford and Tairua Broken Hills properties, near the third branch of the Tairua River. Already three reefs have been located on the surface, one called No. 2 giving goodlooking stone, showing coarse gold. This reef is about 8 inches at the outcrop, and as it prospected so well a winze was sunk upon it for a few feet, and the reef improved in value downwards. Apparently fresh discoveries were, made this week, as the manager telegraphed for the directors to come up, and accordingly Mr. T A. Ash ton and Mr. Joshua Jackson have left for Tairua. It was proposed to sink the. winze about 53ft, to prove, the reef further, and then put in a drive from the side of the hill, which should, within 114 ft, cut all three lodes. KOMATA EEEFS DIFFICULTY. The executive of the Thames Miners' Union appointed Mr James Hnrrlman, vice-president, to wait upon Mr Brown, manager of the Komata Reefs mine in order to arrive |at some amicable settlement re the I single-handed hammer business. It transpires that long ago an attempt was made, to introduce the single hammer into the Woodstock mine, and 30 men at once threw up their situations. Managers contend that where the reef is small it is much more economical to use single hammers, as one man can work in less space than two men, and consequently a smaller quantity of country requires to be taken out. At Gympie and many other hleds in various parts of the world the single hammer system is in vogue, but on the Auckland goldfields the miners are used to the practice of one holding the drill and another striking, and consequently object to the proposed change. It is contended by managers that where lodes are large the double system is preferable, but with small reefs the single-hand-ed hammer is by far the most econo-, mical.
