THE MAYORAL ROBES.

An interesting- ceremony took place at the -meeting of the City Council last evening, when His Worship the Mayor (Dr. J. L. Campbell) was invested in the new mayoral robes by the Deputy Mayor, Mr A. Kidd. The Council remained standing during the ceremony.

On asking Mr Kidd to invest the Mayor with the robe, Mr Hannan, who was empowered to choose, the material and supervise the making, said he felt that His Worship would wear the robe, which he described as a thing- of beauty, with dignity, honour and credit, and that the citizens who elected him to the highest position in their power would feel, when His Worship stepped forward to receive the King's son, that they had the best Mayor and the best robe in the colony.

Mr Kidd said it gave him gireat pleasure to invest His Worship, as there was no man in the city more fitted for the honour than was Dr. Campbell. Mr Kidd then assisted His Worship to assume the robe amidst applause.

The Mayor returned thanks briefly, and then vacated the chair, which was filled for the rest of the evening by Mr Kidd.

The Mayoral robe is of scarlet superfine cloth, lined with white silk and trimmed with, black velvet and sable fur.
