For some time he listened, incredulous. Then he sent a request to the effect that the spirit of the lady who had sat for the purloined portrait should be Summoned and examined as to its whereabouts. This was duly clone, and a series of knocks heralded her arrival. Now, it happened that the medium had but a vague idea of the period in which the artist had lived.
