SCHOOL OF MINES DIPLOMAS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
THAMES, Tuesday,
Kegarding School of Mines diplomas, at last night's meeting of the Council the secretary (Mr Albert Bruce) informed the Council that the advisability of issuing diplomas of associate of the school had been considered several times by the Council of last year, and mention was made in their annual report to the subject, the idea being expressed that the examination should be arranged in such a manner that the Minister of Mines could endorse the diploma. There was also another course, and that was to have the school affiliated with the Auckland University, and if this were done the Council would have the power to issue diplomas under the wing of the University. However this course would involve the right of the University to have a large say in the Council's affairs, and in consequence might involve a deal of friction; besides perhaps interfering with the relations of the School with the Mines Department. As these relations were of much benefit to the school it would be well to thoroughly consider the subject before deciding on any course of action. It was decided that the president, vice-presi-dent, and Messrs Cantley and Haszard sltould act as a special committee to consider the new syllabus.
