FOOTBALL.

WAffll.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

CITY V. WEST.

The third Cup match of the season was played on the Waihi Recreation Eeserve last Saturday afternoon, City meeting West. The day was perhaps one of the most disagreeable yet experienced on the football field, and the gale of wind blowing across the field caused a great amount of line play. Notwithstanding all this, the match was a splendidly contested one, the opposing- teams being very equally matched. The wind was simply terrific, and it was impossible to play anything like an open game. The blue and whites, however, fought a splendid defensive game, though their opponents were near a score more than once. During the first half of the game the blue and whites played a hard-fought game against a strong forward team and a stilfl stronger wind, no score resulting. Most of the onlookers thought that the West; would certainly record a win in the second spell after preventing a score against the unequal odds experienced during the first part. The second spell proved that the City men intended to ward off defeat at all hazards, in spite of the odds beiug against them, as much as they were in their favour during the first spell. The match was a determined and fast one throughout, and in this spell the West took every advantage to score,' but the blacks fought hard and successfully. At times both sides were compelled to force, which proved their equality. No score however resulted, and another drawn game resulted. For West the entire fifteen did good graft, but Cook, Morgan, Cunningham, Hines, McLeay, Brown and Arns were perhaps the pick. For City Phillips, Landy, McColl, Flett, Fraser, Garvey, Bennett, and Graham showed up conspicuously; the rest all worked I well in their respective places.
