New Zeahraders arc mentioned in to-day's cables in connection with au attack on Boers. At the beginning' of this week there were 165 male and IS female prisoners in M.t. Eden Gaol. The American warship Brooklyn is expected to arrive here from Melbourne next Friday. The Mayor invites .the citizens to observe next Friday (May 24) as a public holiday, in memory of the late Queen. The Rev. F. Larkins. late vicar of St. Luke's, Mt. Albert, left for Sydney last evening by the Waikare. en route to England. The Grand Jury at the Supreme Court threw out the charges (three m number) against John Ormsby of selling1 liquor wilhoul a license at Te Ivuit.i, King Country. In accordance with a- recommendation made by the poultry expert, the Government has removed the duty of 25 per cent, on incubators, poultry, bone-crushers and slicers. A letter has been sent by the "Mayor of Auckland to the Governor urging the claims of the citizens mid the Maoris in respect to the much-talked-of Maori canoe display in the harbour. The Itev. Mr Oliver, who has written considerably on the subject of deerstalking in New Zealand, is having a few days' sport at his favourite pastime in. the Waikato. He is staying with Mr Wm. Brunskill, of Taotaoroa. A deeply tattooed old Maori, named Hemene, belonging .to the Ngatimaniapoto tribe, of the King Country, was a witness in a case at the Supreme Court yesterday. Hemene is a skilled tattooer, or "tohunga-ta," and lately returned from a professional visit to Piako, where his services were much in request in adorning the lips and chiiis of the Maori ladies with the blue lines of the tattoo. The Maori flag mentioned in our cables yesterday as having been presented to King Edward by Major" Asquith was sent from New^ Zealand by the high chief Te Heuheu, of Tokaanu, Lake Taupo. It has historical associations. It is proposed hy the united Maori tribes that Te Heuheu shall read the address of welcome which, is to be presented to the Duke of York at Rotorua next month. * McCullagh & Gower will remain open all day to-morrow (Wednesday), and close all day Fridaj-, 24th.—(Ad.)
