A DISAPPOINTING RETURN

ABNORMAL MAJORITY OF FEMAJJES.

(Received 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. The census returns show that the population of Melbourne and suburbs is 493,956, an increase of 3060 since 1891 census.

By natural increase at the rate of 15£ per thousand, the population should have shown an increase of seventy thousand during1 the decade, so- thaiv"'Hstead - of ' an "apparent, increase, there has been a large decrease ;ln 1891 "there were about five thousand more males than females, while at present there are over seven thousand more females than males.
