MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
PARNELL.
The election .of nine Councillors for the Borough of Parnell is proceeding to-day at the Council Chambers, there being the following , ten candidates: — Messrs R. S. Briggs, C. J. BroOk, George Cozens, John Pitt, James Gilmour, C. E. MacCormick, John McCabe, John Petford, H. C. Tewsley, and William Thomas. The polling was lig-ht during the morning and early part of the afternoon, but it is expected to be pretty heavy at about five o'clock. Mr B. Gilmer is returning officer, and Mr Fraser poll clerk. The poll closes at seven o'clock. BIRKENHEAD. At Birkenhead there are 13 candidates for the nine seats, and a good deal of interest is felt in the election. Mr A. White is returning officer, and ■will close the poll at six o'clock. The follojvving , , are the candidates: —Messrs William Wallace,' C. J. Shaw, Henry Day, Tom Hadfield, D. M... Heron. William Thompson, Alexander Keyes, H. P. Taylor, J. G, Kay. E. J. White. Harold.' Frith. John Had-field, and Patrick Donahoe. The polling place is 2ion Hill schoolroom, DEVONPORT. In the Devonport district an election was being held to-day for the return of nine members otf the Devonport Borough Council. There were twelve candidates—Messrs E. W. Alison, H. J. Baulf. E. D. Benjamin, R. H. Duder, James Dunning, Wm. - Handley, Wm; Harrison, R. Logan (jun.), F..E. Mason, W. J. W.Philson, J. M. Syms, and J. A. Walker. Polling , was - not very brisk during , the forenoon, only a little over 100 votes having , been recorded up to twelve o'clock to-day. Mr J. C. Webster is returning , officer, and the polling place is the Council Chambers. ONEHUNGA. The greatest interest is being manifested in the contest at Onehunga. strenuous efforts being put forward by both parties to - secxire the vacant seats. For- the Mayoralty there are two candidates, namely, Mr Donald A. Sutherland and Mrs E. Yates, both of whom have occupied the Mayoral chair, while for the Council there are no less than 15 candidates, namely. Messrs W. Colledge, C. V. Hill, J. Rowe. C. McLeod, J. Shaldrick and E. Yates .(of the present Council), J. D. Jackson, J. Nixon, J. Stoupe, G. Vause (exCouncillors), and J. E. Kelsall, J. N. Rishworth, W. Morton, sen., W. Tole, and F. Walker, who are new men. Vehicles are freely used bringing voters to the poll, and the utmost good humour prevails among the rival candidates.
