SIR BINDON BLOOD.
General Sir Bindon Blood, who has been mentioned as fighting in the Northern Transvaal, has just arrived at the front from Calcutta to take his share in the pacification of South Africa. He is one of the Irish heroes who have made glorious the annals of the British array, He was born the year after King Edward, and is now 58. For 40 years he has been iv the army, and (says "The King") for more than half the'time he has been fightinghard. either iv Africa against savages or m India against rebellious natives. He has been in more campaigns than he can remember offhand, and it would make him tired to count up his battles. He began real war in 1877 in the war-
stricken country to which he is now going-; and two years later he Mas putting down !;he Zulus. The next year took liim to Afghanistan, where he sewed under Roberts; and two years alter he was back again in Africa, breaking ihe power of Arabi Pasha at Tel-el-Kebir. He came out ,of the Egyptian war, as he has come out of all his wars, with honours. It would be almost cruelty to ask him to wear all the medals and clasps and stars he has won during his 20 years of active warfare. He was in Chitral, of course. acting as chief staff officer, and he was present at most of the exciting engagements of that campaign. He was at the capture of the Malakand Pass and the passage of the Swat River. Three years ago. too, he was serving- on the North-Western Frontier, and for his services there he was specially thanked by the Commander-in-Chief in India, and made a majorgeneral, besides being awarded two clasps. In the year these honours came to him he gave up his command of the Bundelcund District for that of a first-class district, and he has filled this position till now. He is one of the men who guard the outposts of
Empire
