On Saturday last a fire, occurred in Hamilton,. a five-roomed < house owned by Mr J. T. Home and occupied by _Mr S. W. Thornton being burnt to the ground. The fire > was discovered by Mrs Sare at noon, and by 1.15 p.m. only the chimney stack was left standing. Mr and Mrs Thornton had only gone into the house on Wednesday last, and were unable to save anything. The house was valued at £140, and was insured in the Commercial Union for £100. The furniture and effects, valued at £350, were insured in the New Zealand for £125. It was the anniversary of Mr and Mrs Thornton's leaving the Old Country, and much sympathy has been expressed for them in the locality. The cause of the outbreak is entirely unknown, as the occupiers were both out all that morning. Smith &. Caughey are showing an immense assortment of boys' and youths' mackintoshes, tweed overcoats, covert coats and reefer jackets. -(Ad.)
