The polling for I lie first Federal elections to-day was conducted very quietly throughout the city and country.

Mr. Reid was returned for East Sydney by an overwhelming majority.

The returns from Hume, up to nine o'clock, show that Sir William Lyne is having a hard tussle with Mr. God-

dnrd, the free-trade candidate

Mr. Coko, Postmaster-General, will have an easy victorY for Parramattn.

Sir William MoMillnn has a large majority over the protectionist candid:l! c for WAitwortli.

The Labour candidates are leading for three seats.

The light for seats in the Lower House resolved itself into one of free trade versus protection. BrueeSniith, a former member of Sir Henry S'arkes' administration, scored heavily over his protectionist opponent. For Hume Sir William Lyne lends by 110, but the returns are incomplete. For Canoblas, Brown, labour candidate, is; leading Wise by 190. The following' protectionist Ministerialists have been returned: For Bland, Watson, labour: Hunter, Barton (unopposed); Eden Momiro, Chapman defeated Wood. Minister of Justice; Ciwydir, Crucikslyniks; Richmond, Evurig; Rivcriua, Chanter, defeating Ashton, member State Legislature.

The following- free traders are returned: East Sydney, Hon. (!. H. T!eid, majority 404!!; North Sidney, Thomson; Dolley Wilks, Purramatta, Cor,;;; Lang, McLean; I'arkes, BruceSmith, a member of Reid's Cabinet; Xcv England, Lonsdale; Robertson, Willis: Harrier, Thomas, labour.
