THE ROYAL VISIT.
THE DECORATION COMMITTEE
The first meeting of the Decoration Committee of the Royal lleceptiou Committee was held yesterday in the Municipal Buildings, His Worship the Mayor in the chair. . The following- gentlemen were added to the committee: Messrs. J. J. Holland, J. Mitchell, A. Neil, J. C. Dickenson, G. Squirrell, Cheney-Sug-?ate. J. L. Holland, r. F. HnlrHo .T. t j. Steele, Frank Wright, A. B. Watson. The ladies on the general comnittee were added to the Decoration "ommittee, the ladies to form a sub■ommittee. The question of allowing boroughs md firms to erect arches was considered, and it was decided that any body, firm or person desirous of "reefing an arch should first submit a design to the committee, who shall determine whether it is up to the required standard or not. Mr. A. Neil wrote suggesting that the girls of the Sunday-schools be nsked to decorate Queen-street with lines of paper-flowers, each school to take a portion of the street. It was decided to invite all the schools (day schools and Sunday-schools) to cooperate in this work. Mr. Neil offered to place girls at the disposal of the committee to teach the school girls how to make these flowers. The meeting then adjourned until Tuesday at four o'clock. THE GOVERNMENT ARCH. The Mayor (Mr. D. Goldie) received the following telegram from the Premier last night: "As you are aware, it is the intention of the Government to erect a triumphal arch in your city, on the occasion of the visit of their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of York. Mr. Vickerman has been instracted to prepare designs, and he will also see you or whoever you appoint as to fixing a site. The Government also desire to have the permission of your Council for the erection of such arch as a preliminary step to proceeding therewith." THE CITIZENS' RECEPTION. The Mayor received the following telegram from Mr. Holmes, Government Executive Commissioner, last night: "Referring1 to your inquiry as to the nature of the reception on the second evening, I take it that special provision will be made for the seating of their ftoyal Highnesses in the Art Gallery or Choral Hall, for the reception evening, to which a large number of invitations will be issued with a view to embracing a wider number of representative citizens than could possibly be invited it Government House."
