THE MAYORALTY.
In view of the expressed intention of our present able Mayor not to seek an extension of his term, it behoves citizens to look round for a man able and willing to assume the duties arising out of the visit of the Duke of Cornwall and York in a manner befitting a city of Axickland's size and wealth. The names of many leading citizens have been mentioned, but we doubt if any i more happy individual suggestion hus been made than that Dr. J. Logan Campbell should be approached. Dr. Campbell was one di the first two white men to settle on the banks of the Waitemata. Since the foundation of Auckland hehasbeeu one of its leading citizens. His long and honourable career, as one of its principal commercial men, and his lengthy services to the communit3 f, have earned him a unique position in our midst. An older generation remembers him as Superintendent of the Province of Auckland; one of the earSest members of the General Assembly; a founder of the Bank of New Zealand; in fact, as closely associated with our city's progress from earliest days. At the present time, stilt an active man'of virile intellect, he is a well-known figure in our city. In choosing him as the, head of our corporation at this juncture we would indeed be but paying a deserved com-
pliment, while seeming a man able to fill a difficult position with dignity and credit to our city. The onerous routine work need not fall on his shoulders. The details of administration would, we feel sure, be discharged willingly by the Councillor .who as deputy Mayor has-with infinite tact assumed a great share of the burden of recent municipal schemes of improvement. We have heard men of all shades of opinion advocate Dr. Campbell as the man most fitted to occupy the Mayoral chair on the occasion of the visit of our future Sovereign; and we feel sure that if it is repre* sented as the general wish*of the citizens the public^ spirit conspicuous in the career of the doctor will not be found wanting in this instance.
