BOROUGH MEETINGS.
DEVONPORT.
The Devonport Borough Council met last evening.
Firebell.—ln reply to Cr. Handley, the Mayor said the Council had already , approved of the erection. of a firebell near the top of Dock-street, but nothing definite had yet been clone.—Tlie matter was referred to the Works Committee.
Mt. Cambria.—The Mayor moved:"That a prize of 20 guineas be offered for the best plan and scheme of laying out Mount Cambria to the greatest advantage for the'borough, and that such plans be submitted to the Council not later than,.. noon 011 April 2 next."—The Mayor said something should be done to make the most of Mt. Cambria. The Council had bought the hill chiefly for the metal in it, but* there was a large area of the Mount that would .not be touched for road metal for many years to come. A good approach was needed from the Churchstreet side, and the question of the approach from the Vauxhall Road side would also have to be considered. The property was one of immense value
to the Borough1, and a careful scheme of improvements would greatly enhance its value.—Crs. Walker and M. Niccol thought that the Mayor should not press the motion in Its present form; it was premature.—On the suggestion of Cr. Niccol, who said that- it would be desirable to outline a scheme first, the Mayor agreed to hold the matter over. —Cr. Alison opposed Mr Macky's motion, and said he could not see any occasion for adopting any scheme for laying out Mount Cambria. He moved "That the Foreman of Works report as to the quality of metal available on tbe Church-street side of Mt. Cambria, and as to the advisability of working metal from that side, and the best means of working the same." —The Council agreed to defer the Mayor's proposal for the present, and Cr. Alison's motion was car: ried. *
Drainage at Lake Road. —The Mayor moved (a) "That the Council agree to provide the totara, box-drain across the roadway at Lake Road, in order to drain the reserves leased by Messrs. R. and R. Duder, as soon as the Harbour Board deepen the channel'sufficiently to meet the requirements, and carry off'all the drainage passing through the culvert." (b) "That tenders be called for 'the work, returnable on the "19th inst.; plans, conditions, etc., to be drawn Up by the foreman of works of 'the Harbour Board." —The motion was carried.
