IMPERIAL TROOPS' RECEPTION.

DISPOSAL OF THE SURPLUS. ,

A meeting of the executive of tha Imperial .Troops' Reception Committee was. held yesterday afternoon in the Mayor's room, Municipal Chambers, Mr. D. Goldie (Mayor) presiding. Various accounts in connection wxtn. the recent gathering in. the Domain were passed for payment. The bal-ance-sheet showed the total receipts to have been £800 14/ S. It was xesolved to settle the catering account for the sum of £190, and it was decided to authorise the Mayor to pay all accounts which might come in, except the City Council account for rent for the cricket ground (£l7), which; it was decided to ask the Council to remit.

A question then arose as to the disposal of the surplus funds (the exact amount of which is not yet known), and the position of the guarantors. In regard to the surplus funds the Mayor suggested that some assistance should be given to the fund in, connection with the city bandstand. A sum of about £05 was wanted to carry throxigh the band expenses for. the rest of this season. He thought the band? which played there would be satisfied if they got about .-£l2O a year, and he thought/the city should pay £60 a year, and the people the other half. This would provide i^ band for six or seven months of the year. As to the guarantors, he considered that the guarantors should be asked to contribute a percentage of their guarantees to the funds. He himself was prepared to give £10 out of his guarantee of £25.

Mr. R. Hobbs considered the city should get a first-ela^s band; it was a disgrace that there was not a good band in the city to play for the benefit of citizens.

The Mayor said there were six bands at present in the city. On the motion of Mr. C. E. MacCormick, it was resolved to recommepct the General Committee to retain the surplus funds in hand for the purpose of the celebrations in connection with the approaching visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. It was also resolved that the guarantors should be seen and invited to contribute towards the fund in connection with the Royal visit.

It was further decided, on the motion of Mr. A. Kidd, to recommend to the General Committee that if the guarantors liberally responded to the call for funds, the sum of £G5 be .devoted to the city band fund.

The meeting then proceeded to consider the qiiestion of recognising the efforts of the two secretaries, Rabbi Goldstein and Mr. R. 11. Hunt, in some way. •

Mr. Hunt said neither he nor the Rabbi wished to take any recompense for their services. The work had been a labour of love, and they gave their services freely.

A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Rabbi and Mr. Hunt for their valuable and arduous services.
