McPike came out of the Auckland Hospital this week after a long and serious illness. It is doubtful whether he will play football this season. An amusing par from the "Otago Witness": The funniest incident 1 have, seen at a sports meeting happened on Saturday afternoon at the Otago Cycling Club's carnival. While the boys of the Industrial School were standing on their marks for the start of the first heat of the 220 yds race provided for them, a diminutive runner on the limit mark, a good distance from the other competitors, in his anxiety to secure n place, got started off on his own, and imagining the others were actually running, he put his best foot forward, and, despite the intermingled cheers of encouragement from some, and cries from others to stop, he ran on, his eyes glued on the judges' box, as if his very life depended upon reaching that j*pot. The fun. became uproarious as the sturdy little fellow contimied on his course alone, and those who saw his face as he kept still first, according to his way, will never forget the fixity of purpose there depicted. He came in alone amid the cheers and laughter of the crowd assembled, and was rewarded with a special prize for his labours. This incident was the most enjo3rable of the whole meeting.
