CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland

City Council was held last evening, when there were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr D. Goldie) and Councillors A. Kidd, R. Farrell, J. Jamieson, A. J. Kntrican, j R. Tudehope, C. Grey, R. Salmon, Atkin, J. H. liannan, T. T. Maselield, C. J. Parr, J. Stichbury, G. Aiekin, J. Patterson, F. i^. Uaume, J. Hcwson, and J. Court. _ Domain Pastures.—A claim was received I'l-oni Geo. Robinson, lessee Of the Outer Domain, to cover losses sustained owing to clients removing- grazing horses^ and cows therefrom during- the encampment of the Sixth Contingent. The writer also claimed a concession on account of the injurious effect upon the pasture land from the fact of the ground having been used tor drill parades, riding parades, etc. He suggested that the damage should be estimated by t\yu experts acting for the Council and himself respectively.—Referred to the Domain Committee.

Place of Amusement. — An application was received from A. M. Myers for a license for a place of amusement over the Strand Arcade.-it was decided to grant flip license when the conditions laid down by the Fire Inspector were complied with.

ICarangahape Ward.—The Ratepayers' Association wrote re the name of Karangahape Ward, Biisfgoatlnr? that the name bo changed to Newton Ward.—Or. Kidd moved, and Cr. Salmon seconded, that the name be altered to Newton Ward.—lt was decided to defer the matter for the time being. Choral Hall.—a. Lucas wrote asking- for permission to hold Sunday evening entertainments in the Choral Hall. He would not make any charge, but would take up n collection, and was willing to give a portion of the propels to a charity to be Mimed by the Mnyor.—On the motion of Cr. Entrican, seconded by Cr. llatinan, it w.t; decided to decline the request.

Water Supply. _ \rynyard and Purchas wrote on behalf of O. Porritt objecting to the Council tapping Canty'a Creek in connection with the water supply.—Referred to Waterworks Committee.

Sanitary.—Considerable discussion took place (rained by a complaint from C. R. Williamson) on the question as to whether notice should bo given by the Sanitary In-

spector to persons hnvlnpr dirty yards before taking legal proceedings against them on that necount. —A proposition by Ov. Graves Aiekin to give notices beforehand was lost, and the matter was referred to the Streets Committee.

Petition.—Cr. Farrell presented a petition from citisrena residing adjacent to

and using the Western Park objecting to the proposed erection of extensive stabling at the corner of Tlopetoun-atreet and Ponsonby Road. They hoped the Council would not permit such a nuisance to be erected. The petition was signed by 111 persons.—Referred to the Legal Committee.

Streets Committee.—The report of the Streets Committee was presented as follows:—(1) Direct Supply Company, permission to erect flagataffs: Permission granted, subject to removal at any time on one week's notice,—(2) C. 11. Smith, us to formation of Arthur-street: Reply that necessary repairs to footpath will receive early attention.—(3) C. M. Newson, forrnalion of lower end of Wallace-street: Reply ihe v.orks would cost between £40 and £50, and as a road terminates at the beach it would therefore be of no aervlco for public Iraflic.—(4) Wrn. Thorne, as to formation of Norfolk-street: Reply that if he obtains consent of property owners in writing to necessary filling- in being- sloped on to their properties the Council will be prepared to undertake? the work.—(s) Ratepayers George-street re kerbins and channelling- Genre-p-street: Recommend that work be done a;i soon as possible.— («) Chnirman City Schools Committee re dralnapo on to school ground, Nelsonstreet: Fnspei-tor of Nuisances to notify Mrs Plumley to provide necessary drainagre.—(7) A. Swimming Baths.—The Legal Committee reported, recommending as follows. amongst other matters:—Re petition for erection of swimming batha, Upper

Symonds and Cook streets: A deputation consisting of Messrs S. I. Clark, W. G. Winstone, J. T. Armitage,. C. Reinhardt, J. C. Coates, Robertson, Patterson and R. W. St. Clair waited on the Committee.— It was resolved that until the water supply scheme is completed the Council will not be in a position financially to enter into the further erection of baths throughout the city.—This was adopted.

Fire Brigade Station.—The Legal Committee recommended, re the Fire Brigade site that the site in Pitt and Beresford streets offered by Messrs Baker Bros., viz., lots 3/5, 8/10.. of allotments 10/11, of section 45, be secured for the Fire Brigade Station.—This matter was referred back to the Committee.

Tarring and Sanding.—Cr. Plannan moved: "That the engineer be requested to report on the tarring and sanding by contract in the North Ward, and if it is as good as that done by the Council workmen or whether it will require to be re-done before the summer expires."—Cr. Hannan strongly condemned the careless manner in which the tarring and sanding has been done lately, and said it had annoyed everyone.—A condemnatory letter was read from the Ratepayers' Association on the subject.—Cr. Parr said tha.t In the Ponsonby Ward they were suffering, like other parts, from a superfluity of tar and very little sand.—The motion was carried.

Tenders. — The following tenders were accepted:—For kerbing Darby-street: Wm. Henry, £64 1/. Drainage In Eden Crescent: Geo. Knight, £18 IS/. For flre hose (3000 feet): The tenderers were: T. H. Hall,

£2t;9 15/; E. Porter and Co., £249; T. and S. Morrin, £221.—The tenders were referred to the Fire Brigade Committee, with po-wer to act. For repairs to fence round the Domain, the tender of S. White and Sons was accepted.

Clerk.—Thirty-seven applications were received for the position of junior treasury clerk, and were referred to the Jysgal Committee to select six out of the number.
