;;,,.. TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB'S

SUMMER MEETING

The second day's programme of the Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting was run through on Saturday last, when despite the rival attraction, there was a very fair attendance of the public present. During the afternoon the sum of £9111 was passed through the totalisator. Mr j. Bollard occupied the judge's box. while the starting was performed by Mr Geo. Cutts. Proceedings opened with the Suburban Handicap, for which Takapuna was sorted out as the one most likely to score, while St. Olga and Val Ro_.a were also well supported on the machine. The winner, however, turned up in the lightly weighted Delia Rose, who, hopping smartly away Immediately the tape flew up, made every post a winning one, romping home fully a length in front oi the top weight "Val Rosa. The Maiden Handicap Hurdle Race was looked upon as being very open. A good field of eleven jumpers went to the post, of which Freewill was in most request, while with th exception of Peacock anci the winner, they were all fairly evenly backed. Once again another of the outside division prevailed, this being the little thought of Telephone IT., Who won In good style, and returned a substantial dividend on both machines. A field of seven little ones went out to contest the Second Pony Handicap, Cuisine and First Whisper being withdrawn. Orange and Blue was made favourite, and the daughter of Souit fully justihed public confidence by running home ahead of the field, but the victory was only scored by a head after a great race up the straight with the Napier-owned Ivan. The scratching pen was freely used in the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap, tor out of the eleven listed on the card, only six were found willing to do battle for the 200 sovereigns. Bluejacket was made favourite, while Dayntree, Cavaliero and St Ursula were very evenly supported. The favourite was always handy, and when once heads were turned for home the son of St. Leger had no trouble in scoring by two lengths from Dayntree. The Hobson Handicap followed, and for this five two-year-olds were sent to the post, Hikipene being the only withdrawal. Despatch held a good position throughout, and looked all oven a winner, but opposite the stand Little Eess came with a fast run and made a dead heat of it.

Only five went out to try conclusions in the First Handicap Steeplechase. Voltigeur 11. went to the front after three furlongs had been traversed, and from this out was never headed, the old grey winning rather easily at the finish by ten lengths from Straybird. A good field of thirteen turned out for the Second Hack Handicap. Highlander was made favourite, while Zeehan was also in demand. Nereid was in front for nearly half the distance, when Zeehan took command, and from this out was never headed, althougn Zuleika made strong efforts from the bend to get on terms with Mr McMiken's mare. A protest entered against the winner on the grounds of a cross was sustained, it being alleged that Zuleika had been crossed by Zeehan as the straight was entered. The day's racing closed w_tn the Anniversary Handicap, only eight out of the dozen figuring on the card going to the post St. Ursula and Regalia were in strong demand. The race provided a splendid tussle between the three placed horses, Motor only gaining the verdict by a head from Peerage, while Voice was close up third.
