Citizens of all classes are in- | vited to observe the day as one of -na-j Itional mourning. The public offices; I have been instructed to drape their. | flags and fly them half-mast. Some«thing further than this may bej I necessary to mark the sad event of I the Queen's death, but in the mean- | time this intimation applies till to- | morrow." I The Wellington Racing Club have | postponed their races until Friday f. and Saturday, but this, of course, is! I but tentative, pending the arranger I merits for public mourning. I The French Consul (Corute de ICourte) had his flag-lowered to halfr 1 mast as soon as the news reached I him, and telegraphed to His ExcelI lency the Governor, who is on his way I back to Wellington, liis sincere conI dolences, together with those of the I French in New Zealand. fi The City. Council met to-day, and on' I the motion of the Mayor passed the! I following- resolution: "That this | Council places on record its heartfelt; I sorrow at the death of Her Most Grar I cious Majesty the Queen, apd its deepj I sense of the great loss sustained by I the millions of people over whom she ruled." Authority was given by the Council for the despatch by the Town Clerk of the following cable to the Secretary of State for the Colonies: "The Council and citizens of Wellington deeply regret the sad news received of the death of our beloved Queen " A Government proclamation, issued to-night, appoints tp-morrow (Thursday) to be a day of mourning, and relieves Government from duty Hon Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
