AREIVALS BY THE OKIENT.

ALBANY, December 30.

By the Orient, which has arrived here, 958 soldiers are returning to the various colonies, including five New Zealand officers and 103 men.

WELLINGTON, Sunday.

Mr Ward, the Acting-Premier, has received information of the arrival of the Orient at Albany with »8 returning New Zealand troopers on board. The message also contains the sad news th.at °Trooper J. Salter, of the Fourth Contingent, had fallen 'Overboard and been, drowned. Salter hailed from Otago. His parents reside at Casey's Bay, near Port Chalmers. Having ascertained that the owners of the Orient were agreeable to allow her to come to New Zealand, Mr Ward has cabled instructions for the trioops to come on by her and disembark at Dunedin, . ..... WELLINGTON, this day. ' The brient, with 98 New Zealanders, after leaving Albany will come to Melbourne and thence proceed to Dunedin. It is probable that the men who came by the Harlech Castle and were divert■ed for the celebration of the Commonwealth at Sydney will return to Melbourne en route for New Zealand.
