COROMANDEL, this day, DISCOVERY OF COAL.

A discovery of coal is reported from Mercury Bay district. The scene of the find is on Crown land near Mill Creek. The coal is of excellent quality, but little is known as yet as to the exact size -of the seam. Arrangements have been made to have the ground thoroughly prospected. COUNTY ELECTION. The poll for election of one Councillor to fill the vacancy in Mercury Bay Ridingcaused by the retirement of Mr Jas. Wilson was held yesterday, the polling places being Mercury Bay and Kuaotunu, the declaration of the poll being in favour of Mr C. O'Brien by a majority of 33 votes. The results were:—Mr F. A. Marshall: Mercury Bay 5, Kuaotunu 30; total 35. Mr C. O'Brien: Mercury Bay 48, Kuaotunu 20; total 6S; informal 1. ACCIDENTS. A lad 10 years of age, the son of Mr William Craze, of Opitonui, had the misfortune to break his collarbone through being thrown from a donkey. The injuries were attended to by Dr. Bull. I

Mr James Maguire, who sustained injuries through a fall from his horse on Sunday last, still lies in the hospital in a critical1! state. His condition is somewhat improved, but he has not. yet regained total consciousness.
