PRIDE OF WAIHr, U.A.O.D,
The half-yearly meeting: took place on Wednesday night last. The balancesheet showed the Lodge to be in o most flourishing condition, having made a gain Of £30 on the funds during the past six months. Sick and funeral pay had been heavy for the past half-year, viz., over £17, as against £4 the previous half-year. 21 new members had been initiated during that time. Officers for the ensuing six months were elected as follows:—A.D., Bro. Collins; V.A.D., Bro, Dormer; secretary, Bro. Malcolmson; treasurer, Bro. Saunders; T.G., Bro. Hughes; 0.G., Bro. Coldicutt; A.D.B.'s, Bros. TVoofl and Ellens; V.A.B.'s, Bros. Baker and Lepper; delegate to Grand Lodge, Bro. MacDonn'eTl. Bro. Grant was nominated . for the District President. The officers will. be installed at Waiklno on Friday night. The local Lodge of Foresters intend holding a grand., picnic on New Year'u Day, which will include swimming races and a baby show. . ■ ■ . DEBATING TOURNAMENT. The return debating tournament with Wtiltelcaurl was held lust night in the Minors' Union Hall. Mr A. 11. Benge prosified. The- question of debate was "Should There be any Distinction of Class, Socially■Speuk;lmj?" Tho visitors o'liose the negative. Mr Buvies opened the debate in tfhe tittlrmative for Waihi, followed by.the Rev. Scott, Wai- , teUaua'l. The next speaker was Mr W. Wallnutt, for Walhl; Mr Snow coming next for Waitekauri, Mr Ross concluding for \Vuilii. The visitors bad only two speakers, lrut the marks of only two of the Walhl representatives were taken when the average was made out. Mr J. McVeagu (Pueroa) refereed, and Messrs MeNaug-hton (Wuitekaurl) and A. H. Benge (Wailil) acted as judges. After the judges had conferred, the referee gave his decision In, favour of Waitekauri by 54 points, the tbtals being—Waitekauri 107, Waihi 11«. After the debate the visitors were entertained at supper by the ladles of the Wailii Society. A vote of thanks was proposed by Mr V. JLouau to the ladles, judges, a«id all those who had assisted in such a cordial manner. Mr T. Carless seconded. Messrs Snow and Scott returned thanks on behalf of the visitors. The following ladles supplied the refreshments and attended to the wants of all in their usual appreciative manner:— Mesdames Benge, Hartley, Joel, Chithain, ; and Molmu, Misses Brown, Liookingtoii, and Gregory. ■
