LONDON, December 3

{Details of the engagements at Eeitfontein, some miles east of Pretoria, and south of the Delagoa railway, show that General Paget in surrounding tlie enemy during tlie evening intended to attack at dawn

The enemy obtained reinforcements, including three guns, and made a determined attac".., but were repulsed with heavy loss.

They withdrew during the night to the north-east.

General Paget occupied the position vacated and sent mounted

troops in pursuit.

The New Zealanders showed great gallantry, and lost five out of six

officers

The Governor has received the following cable from Lord Roberts, dated Ladysmith, the 2nd inst.:—

"I have received, through Lord

Kitchener, an account of the action In which %he men of your colony, under General Paget, bore themselves

with even more conspicuous gallantry than is their custom.

"They have, I regret to learn, suffered severely, five officers out of sis being wounded.

"I am enquiring about the, wounded, and asking for a report as to their

Chaytor,

"New Zealand may well be proud of

such men."
